Billy In the Community

Betty Steinhauer and "My Way"

Betty Steinhauer
Betty Steinhauer
Betty Steinhauer’s long history of community service has gradually led her to her present area of interest and activity. Her talents and energies for the past several years have been devoted to a charitable organization she founded in 1997, The People Bridge Charitable Foundation.

Even as a young mother, Betty was active in the community sitting on a number of boards and lending her expertise to various public organizations. In 1983, she founded Betty Steinhauer & Associates Ltd. a consulting firm where, for twenty-five years, she used her unique abilities to act as a catalyst, facilitator and advisor to both the private and public sectors in forging relationships between organizations and/or individuals for mutually advantageous outcomes.

Betty included a wide spectrum of organizations among her clients, from DuPont Pharma to the Canadian Education Association; from Xerox Canada to the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario. Over the years, Betty served on several committees of the North York Business Association and held membership on various committees of the Metropolitan Toronto Board of Trade and the World Trade Centre. She also did a term as a Director of Parc Downsview Park Inc., in Toronto, and was Chair of its Foundation and Park Committees. As well, she has served on the Board of Trustees of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, home to the paintings of The Group of Seven, in Kleinberg Ontario, and acted as Chair of their Nominating Committee.

My Way
Behind The Curtain's Host Kathy Barrett interviews Betty Steinhauer on her new book with Charu Bahri entitled, "My Way," a quest across the world to find the secret code of happiness.
For many years, Betty travelled widely in out-of-the-way areas of the world. As she travelled, she became aware of the enormous small needs of individuals and communities — things that would improve everyday life enormously, but that were beyond the reach of an individual or community. In response, The People Bridge Charitable Foundation was registered as a charity in 1997. The mandate of the Foundation was to facilitate important changes in the lives of ordinary people through small-scale charitable projects. To date, the Foundation has undertaken over 100 projects worldwide, in places as varied as India, Kenya and Uganda in Africa, four Provinces in Canada, Bali, New Guinea, and Chile in South America. These projects range from breakfast programs, to training for AIDS orphans, to fresh water wells, to community self-help programs, and monetary assistance to an organization working for understanding of individuals with facial disfigurements. Most People Bridge projects are undertaken in conjunction with organizations already working in the target area.

People Bridge is in its last year of operation as Betty winds down the Foundation, but over the years she has been able to utilize her extensive contact base across all sectors of the community to foster its work. Betty’s experience and expertise in business, along with the advice and assistance she receives from colleagues around the globe, give her a unique ability to spot the need and understand how it can be met. Betty has the unusual combination of an entrepreneur’s abilities and an intrinsic understanding of people.
